Teaching Kids How to Fish: The Ultimate Guide to Fishing For Kids

Appropriate Age For a Kid’s First Fishing Trip

Appropriate Age For a Kid’s First Fishing Trip

Kids of all ages can tag along for a fishing trip. As a parent though, here is what you need to keep in mind while doing so:

For kids aged under 1 year old

Toddlers will not fully appreciate the memory you’re trying to create with them despite your massive enthusiasm. For kids in this age bracket, you need to prioritize their well-being and be prepared to be interrupted several times every hour to tend to their needs.

For kids aged between 1 year and 2 years old

Your kid has started experiencing the world around them in more meaningful ways, and will thus be deeply consumed by the natural sights around them. Your kid will be very interested in the water and will even spot moving creatures in it before you do.

While they won’t be able to try fishing first-hand yet, your kid will be very happy to be overlooking your activity over your shoulder.

For kids aged between 2 and 3 years old

Now that your kid is developing their ability to speak, your fishing trip has more potential to be interesting.

Given how challenging it is to keep a child in this age bracket focused for a long time, expect to adapt your fishing activity accordingly.

Consider going for shallow water fishing, or just taking a walk around any body of water to see how your kid reacts to it. Kids will naturally be more attracted to plants and birds, so it will be interesting to discover their reaction to the new elements of nature related to water bodies.

If you estimate that your kid is ready for a small fishing trial, use a colorful fishing float to keep their attention on it. Once it’s cast, your kid may enjoy holding the rod.

For kids aged between 3 and 5 years old

Your kid now has better coordination and communication skills, and better overall cognitive ability. You can discuss fishing strategies and fish types.

Try to involve your kid in planning the trip by letting them choose where to go fishing and then where to cast.

Guide them while you present them with good options to choose from.

For kids over 5 years old

At this age, your kid can have their own fishing case, pick their bait, and cast their rod alone.

They are fully capable of fishing independently next to you, but not without your guidance if this is their first time.
